Easy Ways to Pamper Your Senior Cat

Is your kitty approaching her golden years? Our feline friends usually age gracefully, so, as Fluffy grows older, you probably will see slow, gradual changes, instead of drastic ones. Rather than take giant flying leaps onto the sofa, your cat may begin to carefully calculate her jumps. Your kitty will also sleep even more than she does now. While your pet’s most essential needs—proper food, a clean litterbox, and regular veterinary care—won’t change as she grows older, she will benefit from some extra TLC. Read on as a local McHenry, IL vet lists some easy ways to pamper your aging cat.

Playtime

While Fluffy may still have occasional bursts of kitten-like friskiness, she’ll generally be more interested in catching Z’s than in catching catnip mice. Get your feline friend moving by playing with her every day. Regular play sessions are great for cats, both mentally and physically!

Beds

We know, it may not seem possible, but Fluffy will manage to spend even more of her time napping than she does now. Offer your drowsy feline lots of comfy spots to cuddle up in. Sleepy senior cats are just as cute as kittens!

Grooming

As Fluffy grows older, she may have trouble reaching her entire body to groom herself. Help your kitty out by gently brushing her. Include cuddles and compliments to activate the purr.

Transport

Older cats often have trouble jumping up to their favorite spots. Help Fluffy out by setting out pet ramps or footstools, or give her a gentle lift.

Entertainment

Just like people, cats can get bored with nothing to do. Offer your feline friend a comfy window seat with a good view, so she can watch birds and squirrels and daydream about being a fierce predator.

Facilities

Senior kitties sometimes have trouble getting in and out of litterboxes with high walls. Choose a senior-friendly litterbox with low sides.

Nightlights

Fluffy won’t see as well as she once did, especially at night. Keep night-lights on to help your cat get around after bedtime.

Love

Of course, the most important thing is to make sure your cat feels loved. Pet her, talk to her, and offer lots of snuggles. Your kitty will still love you as much as ever!
